چکیده

Introduction The abundance of anthropogenic litter (i.e., garbage; AL) in marine ecosystems has received attention from researchers, the public, and the media. AL has many detrimental ecological effects such as ingestion and entanglement by animals and assistance in invasive species dispersal (Moore 2008). Accumulation of AL in the environment also presents an economic burden from costs related to clogged sewers and AL removal, and may represent potential hazard to human health (i.e., injury). Rivers transport materials such as organic matter, nutrients, and pollution between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. While many studies suggest rivers are an important source of AL to marine habitats (Stefatos 1999, Galgani et al. 2000, Hammer et al. 2012), the abundance, movement, and ecosystem effects of AL in rivers are unknown.

Shifts in leaf litter breakdown along a forest–pasture–urban gradient in Andean streams

Tropical montane ecosystems of the Andes are critically threatened by a rapid land-use change which can potentially affect stream variables, aquatic communities, and ecosystem processes such as leaf litter breakdown. However, these effects have not been sufficiently investigated in the Andean region and at high altitude locations in general. Here, we studied the influence of land use (forest-pa...

Investigating abundance and characteristics of microplastics as emerging pollutants in sediments of Taleqan dam and upstream river in Alborz province

Background and Objective: Microplastics (MPs) pollution are considered as a major growing global environmental problem in the past few decades. Dams could be an important reservoir for microplastics accumulation, therefore, in this study the presence of microplastics in sediments of Taleqan Dam and its upstream river was investigated in order to: 1) determine the local status of microplastic po...

Anthropogenic Litter in Urban Freshwater Ecosystems: Distribution and Microbial Interactions

Accumulation of anthropogenic litter (i.e. garbage; AL) and its ecosystem effects in marine environments are well documented. Rivers receive AL from terrestrial habitats and represent a major source of AL to marine environments, but AL is rarely studied within freshwater ecosystems. Our objectives were to 1) quantify AL density in urban freshwaters, 2) compare AL abundance among freshwater, ter...

High-levels of microplastic pollution in a large, remote, mountain lake.

Despite the large and growing literature on microplastics in the ocean, little information exists on microplastics in freshwater systems. This study is the first to evaluate the abundance, distribution, and composition of pelagic microplastic pollution in a large, remote, mountain lake. We quantified pelagic microplastics and shoreline anthropogenic debris in Lake Hovsgol, Mongolia. With an ave...

The influence of environmental parameters on the abundance of monkey goby, Neogobius pallasi (Berg, 1916), in Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams, Golestan Province, Iran

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental parameters onthe abundance of monkey goby Neogobius pallasi. A total of 526 and 163 individuals ofmonkey goby specimens were caught by electro-shocker in the Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams, respectively. The ranges of total length of the specimens in Kaboodval and Shirabad Streams were respectively 22-137.55 mm and 32.64-137....
